Much like its use in skincare, coconut oil is a really lovely ingredient in hair care. It smells wonderful, which is always a bonus, but it’s so much more than that.

Packed with vitamins and essential fatty acids, coconut oil nourishes the scalp and helps to remove sebum build-up from hair follicles. It contains high levels of antioxidants and balances pH levels too!

Some people like to use coconut oil as a hair mask in the form of simple, raw coconut oil, but some find that a little bit messy to deal with, making natural shampoos and conditioners the perfect solution.

The benefits of coconut oil on your hair include:

• Taming frizz. By moisturising the hair shaft from within whilst sealing the hair shaft to block out humidity, coconut oil helps to prevent hair from swelling and causing frizz.
• Healing breakages. By penetrating the hair shaft and creating a barrier that smooths the hair cuticles, coconut oil helps to heal and prevent hair breakage caused by daily brushing and styling.
• Soothing dry, flaky scalps and dandruff. Coconut oil contains lauric acid, that provides natural antimicrobial and antifungal properties that reduce any scalp irritation and dandruff. Its emollient properties help to form a protective barrier on the skin's surface, keeping the scalp hydrated and softening any dry flakes.
• Preventing split ends. Whilst coconut oil can't permanently repair split ends, it can prevent split ends and stop existing splits from travelling up the hair shaft. It smooths any frayed hair cuticles whilst moisturising, hydrating and reinforcing hair strands.
• Softening hair. Due to coconut oil's molecular structure it can penetrate deep into the hair shaft preventing protein loss, locking in moisture and smoothing down hair cuticles resulting in silky and soft hair.
• Improving shine. The high lauric acid content of coconut oil helps it to be absobed into the hair shaft, smoothing down hair cuticles to create a smooth shiny surface that reflects light resulting in glossy hair.
