How to mix hair dye colour shades at home

Mixing Your Own Hair Colours

Ever wanted your favourite Water Colour shade to be just a little more golden? Or perhaps, add a hint of red or a dash of copper? Here's how you can do just that...

Tip: This is a follow on from our Hair Colour Numbers primer, so you might want to read that first!

Have A Spare Applicator

The best way to blend the shades is to keep a spare applicator bottle just for mixing the powders. NEVER use this with water to ensure the bottle stays totally dry.

Step by Step...

To make a 1:1 mix (equal parts of two different shades):

1. Tip both of the vials of powder into the clean dry applicator bottle.

2. Put the lid on and shake thoroughly.

3. Using the nozzle, carefully puff the now blended powders back into each of the empty vials - making sure you have an even amount in each one.

4. Write your special blend on the labels of the vials so you remember what you've got in them. This will also help you refine your blend over time.

5. Make sure the lids are on tight to prevent any damp getting in.

They are now ready to use!

It is important to get the levels in the vials as even as possible because if Water Colour is overdiluted it doesn't work properly. If you find it difficult to see, stand them on a windowsill in daylight, or on a table with a lamp behind them.

Advanced Mixing

You can do any combination of shades. Let's say you started with a shade 6/0 (light brown) and wanted to add a hint of chestnut (6/4) but find a 1:1 mix too chestnut.

Next time, you could try 2 x Shade 6/0 with 1 x Shade 6/4's, giving you a 2:1 mix. Split the resulting blend equally between the three vials.

Mixing With Water

When you come to use it, we don't advise mixing up more than one vial of powder at a time in the applicator bottle. This is because the applicator is only designed to hold approximately 200mls of the mousse, so more than one vial won't disperse properly.
